In the modern world, we often marvel at how a slim piece of glass and metal can instantly connect us to anyone, anywhere on Earth. We are, of course, talking about the common mobile phone. But for younger generations, this isn’t just a fascinating tool, it’s an essential companion.
While older generations remember a world where you could leave the house and be “unreachable,” Gen Z and Millennials have never known that life. For them, the smartphone has evolved from a simple device into a social identity and a central hub for everything from banking and health tracking to their entire professional office.
More Than Just a Phone
To a “non-techie,” a smartphone might just look like a screen for making calls and sending texts. But for Gen Z (those born in the late 90s to early 2010s) and Millennials, it is their entire world in one place. Think about it:
- The Bank: Gone are the days of rushing to a high-street branch before 4PM. Most people are also using their phones to pay for everything now. Whether this is online shopping or contactless payments, the possibilities are endless and keep evolving.
- The Map: We no longer keep a dusty A-Z in the glove box; we rely on live GPS to avoid traffic and instantly re-route us if we get lost. We can navigate ourselves anywhere in the world on one device rather than having multiple maps that no one can ever seem to fold back into the right formation (at least us younger generations can’t).
- The Camera: Our most precious memories, thousands of photos and videos, live on these devices and all backed up so you never have to worry about losing them or smudging them or waiting for them to develop (some people won’t even get that reference).
- The Office: For many, the phone is where they answer emails, review documents, and attend meetings. Built in calendars help us keep track of appointments while digital notepads record our ideas on the go so these can be transcribed into usable documents that are, you guessed it, built into the phone or instantly downloadable and usable.
- The Meeting Place: This is our social hub in our hands. From social media to video calling our loved ones around the world in a matter of seconds. We all have the capability to stay connected for longer, because no one needs to write a letter and then wait for a response.
- The Entertainment Hub: We can now stream music, TV shows and other videos. All of us have access to whatever entertainment services we can imagine in the palm of our hands and it is just a couple of clicks away at any given time.
- The Health & Fitness Tracker: Phones can easily be connected to fitness watches to become our own personal trainers. It’s even possible to connect medical devices in order to track heart rate, blood pressure and even hearing aids.
Why Does This Matter?
Because we carry our entire lives on these devices, they have become incredibly valuable, not just because of the price of the hardware, but because of the data inside. At Magikos IT, we like to remind our clients of two important considerations:
- Security is Key: Since your phone is your bank and your identity, keeping it updated and secure is more important than ever.
- Digital Balance: While the phone is valuable, it’s okay to put it down. In fact, many young people are now embracing “Digital Minimalism” to reclaim their focus.
How Can I Keep My Data Safe?
You wouldn’t leave your house unlocked if you went out for the day so why would you leave your phone and all of your valuable data at the same risk? You need to ensure your data is safe and the old methods of phone protection aren’t enough. Here are some security measures that we at Magikos IT recommend for keeping your phone secure:
1. Make sure it’s password protected. The password needs to either be a pin or a password, as a minimum, and it needs to be unique. Having a code that is 1234 is not safe and is the first thing a thief will try if they ever steal your phone. We highly recommend not using birthdays, pets, partners or children’s names as these too are not as secure.
2. If you use your phone for work or it holds sensitive data (most phones will), we strongly recommend using biometric log-ins. There are fingerprints, face locks or anything else that is physically on your person that can’t be replicated easily.
3. Consider using password protection for files or folders that might hold more sensitive data or work related data. If it contains information about clients or access to work email, encryption is required. Most systems have it and it is switched on but others need it have it enabled.
4. Ensure that your device is fully backed up so if you ever lose your phone, you still have access to all of the data. Keeping your data backed up will also mean that less data is stored on the device locally so it will ensure a smoother and faster running of your phone.
5. If you were to ever lose your phone, you can now download apps that track your phone or make it ring so you can locate it. Most smart watches have a Find My Phone feature built in. Businesses may also want to consider remote lock and remote wipe functions to ensure they comply with UK Law and best practise.
Summary
The smartphone has become the most valuable tool we own. It’s our connection to the world, but it also requires a bit of care and a lot of respect. Whether you use yours for TikTok or just to check the weather, it’s clear: we aren’t just using our phones anymore; we’re living through them.
