A nationwide test of the UK’s Emergency Alerts service is set to take place today, Sunday, September 7, at 3pm. The alert will be sent to compatible mobile phones and tablets across the country.
When the alert arrives, your device will emit a loud, siren-like sound and vibrate for about 10 seconds, even if it is set to silent. This is designed to grab your attention in a life-threatening emergency. A message will also appear on your screen, which will clearly state that this is a test and that no action is required.
The purpose of this test is to ensure the system is working correctly and can be used effectively in a genuine emergency. The Emergency Alerts service is designed to warn the public about immediate dangers, such as severe flooding or extreme weather. Since its first national test in April 2023, the system has been used in real situations on five occasions to protect lives.
Motorists are advised not to respond to the alert while driving and to wait until they are safely parked before clearing the notification. For people who have a secret or hidden phone, particularly those at risk of domestic abuse, it is recommended that they switch off their device or disable the alerts beforehand, as the siren sound could reveal the phone’s location.
